Boston – Bonhams Skinner, part of the Bonhams global network of auction houses, has announced the relocation of its Boston saleroom to 236 Clarendon Street in the historic Back Bay neighbourhood. Just steps away from the vibrant Newbury Street shopping district, this prime location offers enhanced access for clients and the local community, which Bonhams Skinner has proudly served for over 60 years. This strategic move underscores Bonhams' global expansion strategy while reaffirming its commitment to the New England market and the broader U.S. audience.

The new Boston saleroom will span two floors, featuring contemporary galleries in a stunning street-facing building with expansive bay windows. Fully open to the public, the space will showcase regular exhibitions from the over 60 live and online auctions presented by Bonhams Skinner annually, while also serving as a preview location for Bonhams' global sales. The new Boston space will serve as a dynamic hub for collectors and enthusiasts, offering opportunities for engagement through public previews, specialist-led events, including lectures, academic discussions, wine tastings, and guided tours with local cultural institutions and historic preservation groups.

With deep roots in Boston, Bonhams Skinner remains a central part of the cultural fabric of New England. As the premier auction house for The Classics with categories such as Americana, Fine Books & Manuscripts, and Decorative Arts, among others, Bonhams Skinner is celebrated for presenting some of the most distinguished estates and collections from New England. The move to 236 Clarendon Street represents an opportunity to expand its offerings while continuing to honour its rich history and connection to the local community.

The new space will open to the public on June 17, coinciding with the Boston Public Art Triennial, a city-wide programme that connects artists and the community through innovative public art. To inaugurate the new saleroom, Bonhams Skinner will present Unsung Makers & The New Americana, an exhibition that aligns with the Triennial's theme while honouring Bonhams Skinner's heritage. The exhibition will explore the evolving landscape of American art and design, featuring works by historically underrecognized artists and makers.

Robin Starr, Bonhams Skinner General Manager, commented, "As the leading New England auction house since 1962, our mission has always been to provide the highest level of service to our clients. Since joining the Bonhams family in 2022, we've worked to elevate this mission, and this move marks a significant step in strengthening our local relationships. With more previews, auctions, and events, this new space allows us to enhance offerings for our loyal clients while continuing to grow."

Lilly Chan, Managing Director of Bonhams U.S., added, "We are proud to build upon the strong foundation Skinner has established over the past six decades, continuing its legacy while deepening our commitment to New England. This milestone aligns perfectly with our ongoing growth strategy in the U.S., which includes the highly anticipated relocation of Bonhams New York to the historic Steinway Hall at 111 West 57th Street. Together, these moves aim to bring even greater access and opportunity to clients and collectors across the region."

Bonhams Skinner will continue to operate its Marlborough, Massachusetts location, which includes a 70,000-square-foot gallery and warehouse for consignment appointments, drop-offs, collections, and select auctions, previews, and events.

This announcement follows the recent news of Bonhams New York's relocation to the iconic Steinway Hall at 111 West 57th Street, set to open by late 2025. Designed by esteemed architects Warren & Wetmore in 1925 and complemented by SHoP Architects' striking modern tower, the new flagship location will feature a soaring 80-foot glass atrium, four levels of galleries, and state-of-the-art auction rooms. Together, these milestones reflect Bonhams' dedication to growth and its mission to bring world-class services to collectors across the U.S. and beyond.

Details on opening exhibitions, auctions, and programming for Bonhams Skinner's new Boston location will be announced in the coming weeks.
