Outsider Art Totals $1.8 Million at Christie's

NEW YORK — Christie’s Outsider Art sale took place Wednesday, 22 January, kicking off New York’s Americana Week. In total the sale achieved $1.8 million, selling 90% by lot and 85% by value. Leading the sale was DER GROSSE SKT. ADOLF-STARN (THE GREAT ST. ADOLF-STAR), DOUBLE-SIDED by Adolf Wölfli, which realized $119,700.

During the course of the auction, the record for William Hawkins was broken twice, first by JUKE BOX, which realized $98,280, and then again by NEIL HOUSE WITH CHIMNEY #2, which realized $113,400. Also featured in the sale was a collection of objects from the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation. The group was 98% sold and was led by two works by Bill Traylor, both of which achieved $37,800: UNTITLED (PITCHER AND BOWL) and UNTITLED (BROWN CONSTRUCTION WITH FIGURES AND DOG).
