Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz, Deputy Chairpersons and Worldwide Co-Heads of Editions, said, “We are delighted with the success of our April Editions auctions, which achieved a grand total of $5,817,489 over the last two days, with a total sell-through rate of 94%, with 43% of Post-War and Contemporary editions selling within or above the high estimate. The exceptional results reflect the dedication and expertise of our team, as well as the enthusiastic participation from collectors around the world. The inaugural MODERNISM 1880-1960: Editions & Works on Paper session was very well-received, including Sonia Delaunay’s Poésie de mots, poésie de couleurs (The Poetry of Words, The Poetry of Colors), which sold for $27,940. Additionally, a recently discovered trove of never-before-seen woodcuts by early 20th-century Provincetown printmaker Juliette Nichols sold through 100%, alongside colorful and rare examples by Pablo Picasso, Giorgio Morandi, Yves Klein, Paul Klee, and Joan Miró, among others. Our April Post-War and Contemporary Editions & Works on Paper auction was led by blockbuster lots from the Evening Sale, including Andy Warhol’s Double Mickey Mouse from 1981, which sold for $635,000, and Ellen Gallagher’s DeLuxe, the complete set of 60 prints from 2004-05, which nearly doubled its low estimate, achieving $203,200. Women artists dominated the evening and daytime sessions of the sale with strong results achieved for works by Louis Bourgeois, Amy Sherald, Joan Mitchell, Mary Heilmann, Ruth Asawa, Anni Albers, Alice Neel, Deborah Roberts, and Polly Apfelbaum. All said, our two-day, five-session live prints and multiples sales drew more than 1000 visitors to our New York galleries and registered bidders from nearly 50 countries, it would seem that spring on Park Avenue is not just for tulips, but Editions collectors, as well!”
